Our Wednesday night meeting was very well attended, with several new people showing up. Our numbers for regular meetings keep growing to the point where we may have to get a bigger room! That’s a good problem to have!

I’ll link the rough minutes and meeting summary here for those who want to read through them. Our Committee’s financial and organizational structure is better than it has been in years, and we’re ready to move onto our next goal of reintegrating our Democratic community fully into our local community.
And speaking of that, we took the first organizational steps toward doing that after the meeting adjourned. We now have four sub-committees that anyone can participate in (you don’t have to be a Committee member, and you don’t even have to live in Dade, although that obviously helps a lot! Email here for more info!)
Party matters: We have a campaign liaison person now and a Youth outreach person, along with what myself and 1st Vice Chair Karen Johnson typically do with the state committee and various caucuses and councils. Our election focus this year is on municipal elections in Trenton, and the special statewide Public Service Commission elections. With our youth outreach, remember that “youth” in voting terms is anyone aged 18 to 39, so we’ll be looking at ways of increasing our vote totals with that age group.
Events and Media: An already established subcommittee, we now have more volunteers to conduct even larger events and start focusing on our media outreach more than in the past. Speaking of that, I will now insert my semi-regular plug to subscribe to our local paper, the Dade County Sentinel!
Elections and Voting: Registration and assisting in the running of elections will be the primary focus of this subcommittee. They will commence sending welcome postcards soon to newly registered Dade voters, and we’re looking into establishing a registration training with our local election office.
Community Service: This group’s mandate is pretty broad and fairly non-partisan: We’re looking for ways to promote and highlight existing community service efforts by our members and create new service projects to connect with people in our community who have similar interests! I’m very excited about the prospects of what we can accomplish with this, and I hope to have a calendar of community activities linked here soon!
And that brings me to cute pets with cute kids pics!
Ann Brown is a long-time member of our Committee who has been an unwavering advocate for the humane treatment of pets here in Dade for decades now. Her non-profit Tri-State Humane Society (you can donate here!) recently had a super successful fundraiser in Trenton hosted by the wonderful folks with Stevie and the Moon, a local area business. Ann finds homes for stray pets throughout the eastern United States. Animal control is often an issue that doesn’t get enough local government in smaller, rural communities, and non-profits like Ann’s go a long way in making up for that. We’re lucky to have her, and she’s one of the non-profits our new Community Service subcommittee is proud to highlight!
You guys are doing an awesome job up there in the far north!!! 💙
